Ink makes over Germanwings magazine![]()

Germanwings has appointed Ink, the global leader in connecting companies with travellers, to produce its inflight magazine starting with the December 2010 issue.
Germanwings Magazin reaches 1.4 million readers an issue, six times per year, and is produced in German and English.
“We chose Ink as our new publisher because of their unparalleled ability to communicate with passengers—in the form of both advertising and editorial content,” said Thomas Winkelmann, Germanwings CEO.
Winkelmann continued: “80% of our passengers are German, and our headquarters are in Cologne, but we fly to over 75 European cities from Madrid to Moscow. Ink clearly understood our corporate objective to communicate with our affluent passenger base more effectively. Germanwings is now the third largest airline in Germany, and nearly half of our passengers are business travellers, so the magazine needs to evolve into a world class communications vehicle. Ink is increasing the frequency and investing in top quality editorial and design.”
Jeffrey O’Rourke, Ink Chief Executive, said: “We have been pursuing Germanwings for over six years, so we are thrilled to finally be working together. The airline is 100% owned by Lufthansa, so we always knew they would demand the best production values. So our objective, starting with the December issue, is to produce the most engaging and effective inflight magazine in Germany—for our client Germanwings as well as the advertisers that want to reach this unique audience.”
Germanwings Magazin will contain a mix of travel, leisure and light business articles in German and English that appeal to the airline’s culturally diverse passenger base. The outlook is contemporary, forward-thinking and informative. While the primary editorial focus is rooted in Germanwings destinations, the content will not be exclusively about travel but experiences that can be had in different cities and the people who inhabit them. Issue one will focus on Vienna, Berlin, London, Rome, Barcelona and Moscow.
The title will be edited by native German Kerstin Zumstein, who has worked for Petra and Für Sie (two of Germany’s most popular women’s magazines) plus Merian, the leading travel title. She has written books for Thames & Hudson and Dr Müller Verlag.

Eurostar appoints Ink to publish its new monthly onboard magazine![]()
[Brussels, London and Paris] Eurostar, the high-speed passenger service which links the UK and the continent, has appointed Ink to launch a new monthly onboard magazine. The first issue will be available to all Eurostar travellers from May 2010.
We awarded Ink the contract due to their creative and commercial response to our needs for designing and publishing an engaging and high quality tri-lingual publication. Equally, Ink’s commitment to minimise the environmental impact of the publication was impressive,” said Nick Mercer, Eurostar’s Commercial Director.
“The magazine will go further than London, Paris, Brussels and Lille, by covering the entire Eurostar network. It will be a thought-provoking general interest and lifestyle publication that will bring to life all aspects of Eurostar’s destinations. It will not be listings-led, but will go under the skin of Eurostar cities, highlighting issues, opinions and often unheard voices. Expect a newsstand quality publication, with occasional guest editors, well-known columnists and expert writers. We will also champion established as well as up and coming illustrators and photographers,” said Michael Keating, Ink Executive Creative Director.
Under its Tread Lightly environmental plan launched in 2007, Eurostar aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per traveller journey by 35 percent by 2012. Eurostar has already achieved a 31 percent cut in journey emissions due largely to switching to lower carbon sources of electricity along its routes, and without using offsetting in order to achieve its target.
“We are delighted to be launching an onboard magazine for Europe’s best-known high-speed rail service. I look forward to working with the Eurostar team to deliver an excellent publication that informs and entertains customers, as well as raising awareness of the company’s commitment to carbon neutrality and environmental issues generally,” said Jeffrey O’Rourke, Ink Chief Executive.

Ink acquires Airline Retail Conference (ARC) and Airline Retail News (ARN) trade magazine
![]()
[London] Ink, the world’s leading producer of inflight media, has acquired the annual Airline Retail Conference (ARC) and Airline Retail News (ARN) magazine.
Jeffrey O’Rourke, Ink Chief Executive said: “Over the course of the last year, we have been building up our presence in the inflight retail market. Acquiring ARC and ARN is a big step, and evidence of our commitment to the market.”
O’Rourke continued, “Backed by Ink, Angie Mullen and the ARC team will capitalise on the success of the 2009 event, bringing more airlines and inflight retail concessionaires and service providers together in an independent forum where they can exchange ideas and work together to grow this already exciting market. In addition to the ARC event in Europe, we are planning to launch an Asian conference in 2010.”
ARC 2010 will remain a business orientated conference for business professionals, and Ink will leverage its platform in the travel industry to ensure that the conference is readily accessible and affordable for airlines and suppliers alike.
Max Williams, the founder of the Airline Retail Conference, will continue to play an important role in setting the direction for the event.
Max said: “I am delighted that Ink is the new owner of ARC and ARN. It is a perfect fit given Ink’s leading position in inflight media, as well as their having the resources to take the conference and publication to new heights and territories”.

Ink’s editor receives accolade for Ryanair’s inflight magazine![]()
[London] Ryanair Magazine received an Honorable Mention from the judges of the Magnum Opus Awards for Best Feature Article (“Madonna’s European Holida-ay”) featured in the July 2008 issue.
Editor Ramsay Short and his team are thrilled to be recognised by the judges and that the Magnum Opus Awards is considered the custom publishing industry’s most prestigious awards.
Now in its sixth year, the US-based ContentWise Magnum Opus Awards (in conjunction with the Missouri School of Journalism, the world’s first school of journalism that opened its doors in 1908) gives recognition to writers, editors and designers who produce exceptional work in print and online. It’s judged by leading industry professionals, including the faculty at the Missouri School of Journalism.
“Producing high-end inflight publications – magazines, entertainment guides and duty-free catalogues – that meet our clients’ brand objectives while also giving passengers something substantial, informative and entertaining to read is a given. Receiving recognition for these achievements is a bonus which we take great pride in,” said Jeffrey O’Rourke, Ink’s Chief Executive.
Ink produces more inflight magazines than any other publisher in the world: 34 airline titles to date. New airline clients this year include United Airlines, KLM, PrivatAir, Vueling, Thai Airways and vivaAerobus.
